Goethe and Schiller in Weimar

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832) was one of the most important poets in Germany. Initially forced by his father to study law and work as a lawyer in the Frankfurt area, Goethe pursued his passion and passion for poetry at the same time. Already at the age of 26 he was invited to Weimar and spent the rest of his life here.

Friedrich von Schiller (1759 - 1805) also found his way to Weimar. Schiller, who also had to study law, fled from Württemberg to Thuringia, giving himself up as a playwright and lyricist.

In Weimar, the two artists got to know each other and together they shaped the Weimar Classicism, which still characterizes the city today, and we can still see many well-preserved testimonies from this period.

Goethe's garden house

As a former vineyard house in the park at the Ilm, this was Goethe's first residence in Weimar. The garden in particular influenced Goethe's works, which often reflect nature. Goethe lived here until 1782, when he moved into the rooms of the Frauenplan, which today house the Goethe National Museum. Goethe wrote the works "Iphigenie","Egmont" and "Torquato Tasso" among others.

Goethe -National Museum with Goethe's House

The museum is the most important museum of Goethe's life history. Many of his works were created in his historic house and garden, and even today you can still see parts of his art and natural science collection as well as his private library.

The museum was opened shortly after the death of his last grandson in 1885. Since then, Goethe's new exhibits and objects have been bequeathed to the museum again and again, so that two museum extensions had to be built at the beginning of the 20th century.

Palais Schardt with the Goethe Pavilion

This is the place where Goethe's love for Charlotte von Stein found her awakening. Charlotte von Stein spent her childhood and youth in the Palais Schardt and got to know Goethe here. His love for her is written in over 1,000 letters - but it has never been a simple love.

Today you will find various temporary exhibitions and the permanent exhibition in the Palais, which shows a miniature view of 19th century interior design. In the fragrance garden you will finally find the probably most beautiful and most important garden pavilion - the Goethepavillon.

Schiller's residence

In 1802 Friedrich Schiller acquired the house in today's Schillerstraße. However, Schiller got into debt in order to buy the house and so his family only lived in the house until 1826. Approximately 20 years later, the house became a municipal property and became the memorial of the German poet.

Today you will visit Schiller's house and experience the atmosphere, the taste of the times and the living conditions of his time. Works such as "Wilhelm Tell" and "Bride of Messina" were created in the study of the house, which is still almost completely furnished with original interiors.

Schiller-Museum

The Schiller Museum is right next to his house. Contrary to what the name suggests, different temporary exhibitions take place here again and again. In the past, Schiller's exhibition on Schiller's life was on display here, but then moved to his apartment building.

Goethe and Schiller Archive

With approx. 130 bequests from writers, composers and artists, the Goethe and Schiller Archive in Weimar is Germany's oldest literary archive. It also houses the archives of 14 publishers, associations and literary societies as well as a collection of more than 3,000 authors.

Thanks to this extensive inventory, the archive gives the impression of being a central archive for literature from the last two centuries.
