Duchess Anna Amalia Library

Anna Amalia von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel became the Duchess of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach after her marriage. Due to the early death of her husband, she led the regency in the dukedoms of Weimar and Eisenach until she handed over the government to her first son Carl August after he was of age. In addition to the government, the Duchess was also a great lover of art, especially music and music theatre were close to her heart.

However, the Duchess also possessed a comprehensive private collection of books, which is now housed in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, along with many other works. It is one of the largest collections of books by German princesses of the 18th century.

Today, the library is also known as the heart of Weimar Classicism and is one of the best-known libraries in Germany. The Green Palace and the Rococo Hall in particular are architectural witnesses of the Weimar Classicism and are well known beyond the borders of the country.

After a severe fire in 2004, the library is now open to the public again and at the same time is a research institute for literature and cultural history with a focus on German literature around the year 1800.

You can visit the library from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Please note, however, that the rococo hall can only be visited to a limited extent. You can find more information here.

Wittum Palace

Duchess Anna Amalia lived for a long time in the palace directly at the Theaterplatz. The table room of the palace regularly hosted social gatherings of the Duchess and famous personalities. Goethe's Friday Society was also held here at times.

Today you can visit the palace and find busts as well as paintings of the Duchess's family and portraits of artists such as Goethe, Schiller, Heder and Wieland. The furnishings are also reminiscent of the then elegant and early classicist style.
